GITE started in July 2001 as Chase Reynolds solo project. 3 or 4 albums were made…and lost. Then Rory joined the band in 2003. They made 3 or so albums also…and broke up before releasing anything. Then in 2008, Chase started the band back up by recording 3 or so new albums…which were hidden away. Finally at the end of summer 2008 he began recording Teenage Royalty and released it on the internet in January 2009. During the summer of that year, a live band was put together. After going through several lineup changes, the band became Chase Reynolds - guitar,vox, Matt Bowers - keys and synth, and Josh Henley - drums.

The band is currently on hiatus but plans to still release Teenage Royalty, Faceless Sonic Boom, Popular Death, and possibly a few others releases sometime in 2010.

Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

Roxy Music were a London, England basedart rock group founded in 1971 by art school graduate Bryan Ferry (vocals and keyboards). Other members were Phil Manzanera (guitars), Andy Mackay(saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson(drums and percussion). Former members included Brian Eno (synthesizer and “treatments”) and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin), who replaced Eno after Roxy Music’s second album.

Roxy Music were a significant influence on the early English punk movement, as well as providing a model for many “New Wave” acts and the subsequent New Romantic and experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. Ferry and co-founding member Brian Eno have also had broadly influential solo careers. Brian Eno has emerged as one of the most significant record producers of the late 20th century, with credits including landmark albums by Devo, Talking Heads and U2.

The group’s name was partly an homage to the titles of old cinemas and dance halls, and partly a pun on the word ‘rock’. Ferry had first named the band Roxy, but learning of an American band with the same name prompted the alteration of the name. The juxtaposition of nostalgia with contemporary or futuristic themes was a distinctive feature of the band, particularly in their earliest incarnation.

There was no punk band more deliberately effete than the Monochrome Set, and very few anywhere near as smart. In their original (1976-1985) incarnation, they made a handful of slightly-off-target albums, but this 1983 compilation — seemingly slapped together from various singles, radio performances and clips of people talking about the band — is a front-to-back joy, fast, restless and perfectly sequenced.

Indian-British singer/guitarist Bid, whose vocal style owed more to pre-war crooners than to most of his contemporaries, and a guitarist who called himself Lester Square (after London tube stop Leicester Square) were the core members of the Set in that period, and their sharpest songs combine their high-aesthetic pose with punk's acid sense of wit and straight-to-the-point sonics. They rip through "The Jet Set Junta," a very funny song about Latin American political mayhem (featuring extensive onomatopoeia and a deliberate mispronounciation of the title), in two minutes flat; the instrumental "Lester Leaps In" lifts its title from saxophonist Lester Young's standard, but it's actually a showcase for Square to crossbreed a Clash-style riff with an easy-listening surf-guitar solo. And smack in the middle is the best version of their greatest song: "He's Frank (Slight Return)," a mighty 159-second rocker with the band playing three killer riffs simultaneously, a chorus that's entirely instrumental, and Bid singing a lyric about an aging loverboy that prominently features the words "forsooth" and "secular." - douglas wolk/emusic

This highly limited split 7" is Paw Tracks' Yuletide offering for 2008, pooling the talents of Brad Truax (from Home and Jah Division), Antony Hegarty, ex-Mùm star Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir (aka Kria Brekkan), Abby Portner of Rings and Dave Portner from Animal Collective. As you'd probably hope from such a release, this 7" is brimming with pseudo-vintage, festive weirdness, decked out with old-fashioned 78rpm-style sound effects and crazed sleigh bell antics - it's just how you'd imagine Christmas round at the Paw Tracks ranch. Birthed by Mouth in the year two-thousand and five, young Edward Sharpe had to wait nearly two years before he was to grow his arms and legs and fingers and toes.
Immaculately conceived, his father (a Robot who had magically become a real boy…but that’s another story) declared his undying devotion to the creature. He perched the fleshy bust upon a teetering pedestal fashioned from stacked cereal boxes and positioned the display at his window for all the town to see. Young Edward soon proved no ordinary boy.

Though his father had figured him deaf for his unresponsiveness to sounds, he in fact had the universally unique condition of being deaf from hearing too much or, more correctly put, too well. In plain words, he heard EVERYTHING AT ONCE.

"Eckords" is the first release by Flash Lights, the duo of Liz Harris (better known as Grouper) and Bay Area sound sculptor Jorge Behringer. Here, Liz's spectral vocal transmissions (the ones that blew our collective minds on last year's superb opus "Way Their Crept") are augmented by disorienting field recordings, bubbling electronics, meditative guitar lines, and Jorge's angelic, processed viola. Each piece is unique and bursting with vibrant, otherworldly energy, running the gamut from almost poppy (!) songforms, to distant choral ghost codas, and moving effortlessly from seering blasts of electronics to calm, glacially evolving, painstakingly wrought towers of dynamic vocal murk. When Tim Cohen told Shayde Sartin he was writing a song called "Be My Hooker," the Fresh & Onlys bassist looked at the singer/guitarist and said... "'There's no way we're gonna have a song with that title, dude,'" explains Sartin. "But sure enough, he laid a riff down and I was like, 'Jesus christ, I can't believe you pulled something meaningful out of such a stupid line.'" Welcome to the push/pull dynamic that's fueled the Fresh & Onlys' steady stream of releases over the past year, including last spring's self-titled LP (Castle Face) and this fall's Grey-Eyed Girls (Woodsist). And to think it all started the old-fashioned way" with Sartin and Cohen simply hanging out after work, playing their favorite punk (Buzzcocks, The Mekons) and classic rock (Country Joe and the Fish, cued up alongside slabs of psych from the group's homebase, San Francisco) records alongside a growing collection of empty beer cans. "I can't really explain what happened or why," says Sartin. "I guess we listened to records until we were on the same page, and from that point on, we never stopped recording." As simple as all of that sounds, the duo first bought a tape machine five years ago. When that failed to produce any concrete cuts, Cohen focused on his previous avant-pop band, Black Fiction, and Sartin split his time between session and live work for such bands as the Skygreen Leopards, Papercuts and Citay. Not to mention his close friend Kelley Stoltz, who ended up releasing the first Fresh & Onlys 7" (the limited Imaginary Friends EP) in early 2008. With so much music hitting shops in such a short time (Sartin says the band already has boxes of backlogged tapes), you might think the Fresh & Onlys camp have a problem with quality control. Quite the contrary; Sartin and Cohen are very careful about what they release. And while the duo writes and records the band's songs, the arrangements are usually fleshed out with guitarist Wymond Miles, drummer Kyle Gibson, and backup singer Heidi Alexander. "If we take a song into the studio or a live setting and it doesn't have wings," says Sartin, "Then we just ditch it and keep the charming demo version." The final mix of Grey-Eyed Girls sounds like a natural bridge between the raucous garage rock of the group's debut and the full-on studio record they plan on wrapping for In the Red later this year. That goes for the galloping grooves of "Happy To Be Living," the shadowy post-punk of "Invisible Forces," and the firework finale freak-outs that drive "The Delusion of Man." Not to mention a stack of hook-slinging tracks that nix any 'shitgaze' assumptions you may have. "We're not trying to hide melodies or do the blown-out thing," says Sartin. "A lot of those bands are great, but I don't want to ever cater to what's popular. It's not that I'm being reactionary; we're just trying to make recordings that are as rich and ear-friendly as possible." It's working. - Woodsist

2009 - The Long Afternoon of Earth

The latest Preservation release hails from the USA's Midwest, featuring a double helping of songs from multi-instrumentalist and lo-fi folkster Clare Adrienne Cameron Hubbard. Although each CD is only an EP's length, the two sets of songs have been divided to denote the stylistic differences between sets, even though Hubbard's songwriting tone remains steady throughout. On the first disc Caethua evokes the raw intimacy of Diane Cluck, occasionally augmenting her spindly acoustic guitar accompaniment with some appropriately out of tune orchestration (put to best use on the wholly excellent 'Sons Of The Hounds'). Taking on a more esoteric character, the largely piano-driven spook-echo of the second disc proves to be a quality turn, occasionally sounding like Magik Markers in one of their more eerie, contemplative moments, or possibly Women & Children. If you're not already fully sold on Hubbard's work based on the first batch, then this second one will surely seal the deal. It transcends the rickety naivety of the first, coating the songs in a rather dark and introspective atmosphere - good stuff.

The story of The Books began in 2000, when Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong met through a friend in New York City. Sharing similar interests but different backgrounds in acoustic music and found sound, Zammuto and de Jong took their sonic experiments to the studio. Eventually, with some urging by Tom Steinle of Tomlab Records, they created what would become their debut record, Thought for Food, in 2002. Within a year, the Books relocated to Hot Springs, NC, and recorded and released The Lemon of Pink. With a lot of favorable word of mouth and critical buzz from the first two records, the Books relocated again in winter of 2004 and recorded in an old Victorian home in North Adams, MA. With the release of Lost and Safe in April of 2005, the Books prepared to tour with their unique blend of samples and acoustic music. All three Books albums were released on Tomlab Records.

The Skaters - Physicalities of the Sensibilites of Ingrediential Strairways

The Skaters are California’s Spencer Clark and James Ferraro. Best described as the moon-chantings of plains indians who found accidental gateways to other dimensions in rotted old trees filled with bioluminescent bacteria.

Over the past years, since meeting at an all-day improvisational noise jam when they both called San Diego home, Ferraro and Clark have developed, as you can plainly read, an intuitive, radically abstruse language when talking about their music and visual art, informed, in parts , by mysticism and surrealism, in which subjective states of mind and the objective world are intentionally confused to the extent that both fuse into a single, undivided whole.

The end result is not what you would expect — i.e., a pretentious, painfully dry avant-garde free-noise. Quite the opposite, it’s a totally out there, vocal-dominated psychedelia, based, structurally speaking, on the open-ended drone heard in industrial music, minimalism, experimental electronics, folk, world music, and free jazz. And, like the best free jazz — the early, fiery stuff: Trane, Ayler, Sanders — the Skaters’ noise-drenched cosmic soul is driven by their need to, in the words of Ferraro, “grasp something that is beyond what you can verbalize.”

On a cold night circa 2007 I wandered into a coffee shop and encountered a young man in a confrontation with his guitar and his gentle, fragile voice. After cutting the show short and mumbling a heartfelt apology to the 10-15 of us there I walked back out into the biting cold and the name "Grizzly Prospector" was filed somewhere in my subconscious. Fast forward to 2009 and "Grizzly Prospector" is back in the forefront of my mind. I don't know much about Parker Yates, the man behind the grizz, but I do know there is something about his short, simple songs that grab me with a fragile, tangible grasp for the few minutes they are on. Recorded with a decided lo-fi approach, Grizzly Prospector wraps his short, sweet tunes, and his fragile yet assuringly confident voice in a thin sheen of tape hiss that sounds like an old 45 you saved from your Grandmothers estate sale. I suppose this is the aesthetic he is going for on Old Mountain Radio, tiny depression-era folk songs about love, mountain men, grizzly bears, and a kindly old narrator who introduces the album with an inexplicable cajun accent. Bookmarking each end of the album is a spoken word piece titled "Bare Hands/Bear Hands" that seems to begin and end the journey of loss, love, and discovery on this little disc that clocks in at just under 24 minutes. Stand out tracks include "Medley" and "True Love will Find You in the End" which include some of the best strummed guitars + voice I have heard all year. These two tracks are sandwiched between a handful of pretty instrumentals, short song cycles and good starts. What must have been a frustrating night two years ago has turned into a small victory for both Grizzly Prospector and Magic Goat Music who is hosting this album for free! You can't miss this opportunity to grab yourself some pure mix-tape-to-the-one-you-love gold.

Norfolk and Western are from Portland, Oregon and play folk music that includes, as part of its stage set-up and sound ensemble, a turn-of the-century Victrola Grammaphone. The band consists of core members and couple Adam Selzer (band founder, guitar, lead vocals) and Rachel Blumberg (drums, keyboards, backing vocals) with rotating cast members Tony Moreno (guitar, banjo, accordion, found sounds), Amanda Lawrence (viola), Dave Depper (bass, vocals, piano), Cory Gray (trumpet, piano), and Peter Broderick (violin, banjo, saw, mandolin, theramin, and accordion).Norfolk and Western began as the recording project of Adam with friends playing various instruments, and evolved over time to become the fully orchestrated band it is today. In the early days Norfolk and Western’s sound was whispery, intimate, elegant folk music laced with creaky old instruments and atmospheric sound collages. The band still retains glimmers of this original form, but with their latest release, A Gilded Age, they defy their usual descriptors and comparisons. The songs on A Gilded Age cascade dynamically and unrelentingly, beginning with the Victrola and string swell opening of “Porch Destruction” to the overdriven guitar and banjo attack of the title track. Each song serves the whole, adding layers of depth, drama, and subtlety to an undeniable tapestry of music. The interplay between light and dark, loud and soft—is expertly realized by Norfolk and Western both on this record and during their enthralling live show, which features band members frequently switching instruments and film accompaniment.

gowns are an experimental group formed by EMA (my robo bedroom) and Ezra Buchla in late 2004. At the time, Ezra was playing in the Mae Shi (5rc, Join or Die) and EMA was playing in Amps for Christ (5rc, Vermiform, Shrimper, etc). In the summer of 2005 they released an EP on folktale records called ‘Dangers of Intimacy’. This is a noisy folk record featuring a collaborative track with Carla Bozulich (Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella). The music is raw, hushed, and sweetly nostalgic. After playing shows around the country the Gowns ended up in South Dakota where they recorded the album ‘Red State,’ released in March 2007 after two years of “compulsive re-tracking and re-mixing.”

The group recently relocated to Berkeley, CA, and is playing full time with drummer corey fogel, also from the Mae Shi.

Musically he's never failed to make us take notice of his growing stature initially via his lost classic debut for Mille Plateuax's much missed Ritornell offshoot 'Eisotrophobia', then onto Faalt and then Orthlorng Musork. Undertaking a project to transfer from tape to digital some old tape recordings of Icelandic vocal lament songs presumed to have been recording in the 1960's Akira claims to have been completely obsessed by them to an extent where he wished to incorporate the vocals into his own music. '1382 Wyclif Gen. ii. 7' - the single voice swept up into an echoic overlapping framework, subtely falling apart until a strong wind blows across a group of microphones - astonishing. '1390 Glower Conf. II.20' is a more melancholic song, one which would lie perfectly within context in one of Ingmar Bergman's stark films like 'Winter Light' and 'Shame'. '1440 Promp Parv. 518/20' finds Akira hightening the ghostly quality of this vocal through reverb, echo and subdued time stretch that would make a Chris Morris disturbathon sketch even more effective. '1483 Caxton Golden Leg, 208b/2' stretches out for over twenty minutes feeling like a floating fogbound rework of Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Lux Aeterna'. To round up 'Spellewauerynsherde' brings to myself memories of loved one's passed, favourite films that haunt your consciousness for weeks after viewing and make you want to revisit your favourite spiritually enhancing CD's. Not many album's will move you in quite the way that this album does. Believe. - boomcat

When Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields met in Toronto in 2005 they wanted to hate each other. The two were dating sisters and resented the forced time they were expected to spend with one another, until a conversation stumbled upon their mutual obsession with the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. Zach was so preoccupied with ghosts as a kid that he was put into therapy, and Ryan parents moved out of his childhood home because they believed it was haunted. Neither of them had really outgrown their fascination with ghosts, monsters, graveyards, zombies or anything deathly. Once they realized their shared affinity for the eerie, they started trying to write a theatrical monster ghost love story for the stage. They decided that this story should have music so they began learning how to play various instruments. By the time they had written their first few songs they realized how difficult it would be and how much money it would cost to create the show. They decided to continue with the music and put the play aside. Dead Man's Bones began recording, and quickly decided that the songs needed the special creepiness and longing of massed children s voices to complete the sound L.A.'s Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir was brought in to the studio, and Dead Man's Bones, the album, was born. Some of their songs reflect the music they listened to a little bit of doo-wop, and artists such as the Shangri-Las, The Shags, Company Flow, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Bobby Vinton, Joy Division, The Andrew Sisters and Daniel Johnston, to name a few. In addition, the artistic aesthetic of old Universal horror films, vaudeville music-hall numbers, and silent-screen melodramas infest the music.

e.p. hall makes thinky, creepy, guitar-and-electrobuzz folksongs from the lonely midwestern united states. The project’s influences include various diy, freak-folk, and new/weird mini-movements. The most well known of the e.p. hall recordings is the 2006 ep ‘The edge the middle’ . ‘Mommy Crow’ is scheduled for release in 2009. Other releases include ‘this is a demo’ from 2003. e.p. hall songs have appeared on two of the Live from Bloomington charity compilation projects (2007 and 2009).

The project has been described as having a “haunting vocal style and unique finger-picked guitar combined with…warm and engaging keyboards and effects to create beautifully mournful songs”.

e.p. hall’s only constant member is a female human named e.p. (though, confusingly, not named e.p. hall). Former contributors include Lone Logician and Joshua Radicke. Current collaborators include Andy Goheen of Sticky and the Bees.

Woods is an acid/strange/psych folk rock band based out of Brooklyn, New York. Members include Jeremy Earl, Jarvis Taveniere, and G. Lucas Crane. The band is known for strange and upbeat folk rock hymns. Decaying before taking off and dancing before dying, the songs range from vocal-harmony jams to meandering and noisy tinges of noise.

Girls is a band from San Francisco started by Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White in 2007. The band’s lead singer, Christopher Owens, is a former member of the Children of God cult. They were named “the year’s best new artist” in the October 2009 issue of Spin Magazine. The New York Times compared the band’s sound to Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, and the Beach Boys.

Pitchfork named their song PlayHellhole Ratrace one of the “Top 500 Songs of the Decade” in August 2009. Their debut album entitled Album was released on True Panther Sounds, September 22, 2009. Chris was formerly a part of Holy Shit with Ariel Pink.

Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track, 45-minute debut that is incomparable to any in this field in recent times.

DOPO is a Portuguese psych/freak folk band formed in late 2004 around Oporto, Portugal. DOPO began to record improvisations using many instruments, including toys, singing bowl and organs. The first result of the many homemade recordings they’ve made is on “Last Blues, To Be Read Someday”, an EP released in December 2005 on Portuguese netlabel Test Tube.

Although this eponymous album may be the debut from occasional New Yorker Fred Thomas, he's far from a newcomer to the scene. Rather he has spent most of his life in search of the perfect pop music, first as the frontman/mastermind of Saturday Looks Good To Me and now under his oddly monikered solo project. Apparently the name comes from European tours where the sign 'City Center' was such a regular (and reliable) sight, but gives few clues to the unknown pleasures held within Fred's music.

Taking cues from the skewed pop music of Arthur Russell on one side and Brian Wilson by way of Panda Bear on the other, Fred has channelled an outsider pop masterwork. Thick waves of decomposing electronics and processed instruments (is it gamelan? Is it something else altogether?) crash and fizz beneath Fred's singular chanting vocals. There's a sense that someone, somewhere might be singing along to these songs, but hearing them on mainstream radio might be pushing it a little too far. Sandwiched in-between three-minute pop marvels such as opener 'Killer Whale' and the stand-out 'Summer School' are extended ambient experimentations, but unlike the occasionally academic workouts you might expect from Type these feel organic and distinctly home-brewed.

There is something magical about Fred Thomas's distinct and original musical creations, something that grabs you and won't let go. We're not entirely certain what that is but we're sure if you give City Center a try you'll feel exactly the same as we do. Lichens was the solo improv project of Chicago composer Robert Lowe, previously known as the bassist with art rock combo 90 Day Men. A product of the Kansas City area, Lowe signed on with 90 Day Men in 1996, just prior to their relocation from St. Louis to Chicago; when the group went on hiatus following a European tour supporting its 2004 disc Panda Park, Lowe channeled his energies into his long-simmering solo pursuits, appearing as Lichens at that summer's Arthur magazine-sponsored Million Tongues Festival and self-releasing a limited-edition CD-R, R. Brown. Spacemen 3 were an English psychedelic shoegaze drone band formed in 1984 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Jason Pierce and Peter Kember. Their first album, Sound of Confusion (1986), was not successful commercially, but it attracted a loyal fanbase. Its follow-up, 1987’s Perfect Prescription, is a concept album mirroring the highs and lows of a drug trip. It expanded the group’s core of fans and is generally considered their masterpiece.

Women was formed in late 2007 by Chris Reimer , Mike Wallace and brothers Pat Flegel and Matt Flegel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Their debut full-length was produced by local hero Chad VanGaalen (in his basement studio) and was released (CD/LP) July 8th 2008 on Flemish Eye Records. In July 2008 they signed with record label Jagjaguwar and their S/T debut album was released worldwide on October 7th 2008 on JagJaguwar and will be released in the U.K in January 2009.
